A Few Highlights From The 2022 Outdoor Season

Above are a few of the highlights that Wisconsin Track Online covered during the 2022 season. After 29 years the 2022 season was the last chapter. After a false start in 2021 of not continuing the website [with no 'DQ' ] coverage continued with features and an Honor Roll listing. However during the 2022 season coverage was scaled back quite a bit with no Honor Roll listings. In the future Wisconsin Track Online will try to help publish Top 50 All-Time Athlete achievements until another platform can be found to host the history of girls track and field via the Top 50 lists.

Some of the highlights above L-R: After a tragic accident while in 7th grade Dodgeland's Ava Finger was able to compete as a ninth grader with Coach Kevin Klueger's team. Seeing Finger wait to compete on a rainy cold morning and then throwing the SP at the Deerfield/Cambridge D3 sectional was uplifting.

While photographing meets I have missed many highlights. However at the WIAA State Meet this season I was able to catch Oak Creek's Rachel Blaskowski's record setting D1 long jump record of 19' 09.75.

Watching athletes over their four year careers was special and seeing Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg distance runner Kayci Martensen win the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m two years in a row was memorable.

During the regular season Wisconsin Track Online caught Chippewa Fall's Brooklyn Sandvig early in the Northern Badger Classic Indoor Meet and at the Big Rivers Conference Meet. At the BRC Meet Sandvig set 4 conference records in the LJ, 100, 200, and 400 events. And in all four of those events she had Top 50 All-Time Athlete performances.

Seeing Stevens Point's Roisin Willis compete in the 2019 Wisconsin Valley Indoor Conference meet as a ninth grader was exciting. But not as exciting as watching her final race as a high school athlete when she posted a record 800m time of 2:00.03 at the 2022 State Meet that would have won the 2022 NCAA 800m event [winning time 2:01.09].

2022 was certainly the year of the vault with weekly highs posted that climbed the Top 50 All-Time list in that event. From across the track courtesy of a long range lens Wisconsin Track Online took a photo of Homestead's Peyton Berryman's record setting D1 vault of 12' 09.

And in D3 at this years meet Webster's Ava Washburn won the TJ, LJ, 100m HH, and placed a close second in the 300m LH to give Webster 38 points and the D3 team title. After twenty-nine years there are too many highlights to mention. All of the meets I attended gave me an appreciation of the outstanding teacher/coaches who lead the younger generation, dedicated athletes from first to last place, and the special qualities that students learn when being a track and field athlete. Juniors Emma Steffes [Dodgeville/Mineral Point] and Delanee Klaas [Fennimore] show what
1/100ths of a second looks like. Klaas won with time of 16.51 with Steffes a close second in 16.52.

Roisin Wills [Stevens Point Area Senior High School, 54.67] and Brooke Jaworski [Wausau West, 54.97] come out of the final turn giving track fans a race finish they will never forget.Very similar to her 800m win [2:05.70] at the New Balance Indoors on March 10th, 2019, Willis staged a furious finish overtaking Jaworski in the last 10 meters of the 400m race. Willis [Class of 2022] went on to set the State D1 Record in the 800m run while Jaworski [Class of 2019] who is the D1 State Record holder in the 400m dash, 300m LH, and 4x400m relay events had an impressive freshman season on the University of Texas track and field team.

Paper [pdf] copy of the May 23, 1993 Honor Roll. Thank you to Coach Greg Eichelkraut for providing this copy. Jack Rauwerdink of Oostburg compiled both the Boys and Girls Honor Roll in addition to coaching the track teams at Oostburg in 1993. Beginning in 1994 the Girls Honor Roll included both private and public high schools.

Lists from 1981, 1982, and 1983. If you can scan your paper copy of the Honor Roll lists put out by Bill Cross [Whitefish Bay HS and Oostburg HS], Lois Wolf [Whitefish Bay HS], or Jack Rauwerdink [Oostburg HS] from 1972 to 1993 please send that file to Wisconsin Track Online.
