R3: Bass Coast – Stage 1 Conceptual Skills and Arts Development Project was the first stage of a pilot program based in South-West Gippsland bringing media art to a new community. Over 70 young people from across the region engaged in the creative workshop program.

The young people were mostly aged 15 – 25 and did not usually identify as creative or artistic, so R3 opened the world of art and cultural development to a new community of creative contributors. It offered young people pathways to personal development and social inclusion.

R3 built the skills of young participants in areas including communication, problem solving, teamwork, digital technologies, adaptability and leadership, improving their self-confidence and sense of community connection and belonging.

Creative workshops were offered two days per week in Wonthaggi. In the workshops, young people from diverse backgrounds came from across the region to collaborate with artists and each other  to identify and explore issues that mattered to them and that they wanted to make art about. These concepts drove skill development in photography, video, animation, digital imaging and small press publishing.

The  work devised was showcased as rear projections in a shop front in the main street of Wonthaggi and as two Zines which were distributed across the region. The public exhibition of their work fostered positive community interaction and encouraged a greater understanding of issues that affect youth in the region.
