Utah may be one of the states that is nearly square in shape, but there is nothing square about it in general. Full of mountains and deserts, this state has been in the nation since 1896 when it became the 45th state in the Union. It is famous for its skiing, and many who live there are very religious, being Mormon in their beliefs. This group had many problems with the Federal government over its beliefs, until 1890 when they renounced the practice of polygamy. That was a full six years before Utah become a state.

The state itself is rich in many different minerals like copper, gold, silver, and zinc. It is actually the only state besides Colorado that produces Gilsonite, which is a pure form of asphalt. Utah also produces large numbers of cattle. In recent years, the state has become important in the world of biomedicine and aerospace as well.

As large as the state is, there are only 29 counties. The ten oldest counties were established in 1852. About two-thirds of the population resides in one of three counties: Salt Lake, Utah, and Davis counties.

Utah follows the state government model, the same as the Federal government. Three branches that make up the government that provides for the people of the state.

Their highest court is the Supreme Court of Utah, with five justices, one of which is Chief Justice. This court takes on the cases of the utmost importance and often deals with higher profile cases that may come out of the state.
