Machakos - A boda boda rider who saved for five years to buy land in Mavoko, Athi River, has been left heartbroken after his property was brought down in the ongoing wave of demolitions in Machakos.

Simon Kisoi, who is among the Mavoko locals who have been watching their houses being brought down since Saturday, October 14, said he bought the land after saving for five years.

Speaking to Citizen TV, the boda boda operator said it was too painful to bear watching his five-year savings being brought down as he saved after hustling with his motorbike.

"My heart is in pain because I built that house after saving for five years through this boda boda. I had worked so hard to save the cash to secure my future, but now I have been left with nothing," he painfully said.

Similarly, a Kenyan man who worked in Juba for many years had his seven-bedroom house brought down.

Who is to blame for the Mavoko demolitions?

Most of those affected could not help but express their pain, with others saying they were still preparing bank loans they took to purchase the land and build their palatial homes.

Several victims of a land row pitting East Africa Portland Cement PLC and Mavoko sub-county residents blamed their woes on Machakos county leadership.

Their accusation against the county is that the latter approved their building plans and other compliance documents and invoiced them.

Mavoko victims cry foul

Immaculate Mukendi, a pensioner whose nearly complete mansion was brought down, said that Machakos County's Lands and Physical Planning departments approved her building plan, arguing that no one could have brought up a structure without showing land ownership documents.

Isaiah Makiti, another casualty of the demolitions who works in a Nairobi-based firm, recalled county officials arresting his labourers for lack of approval.
