Candidates from two secondary schools in Nairobi have benefited from a donation of scientific calculators ahead of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

A leading educational technological company, CASIO, made the donation.

CASIO Middle East and Africa FZE, the regional subsidiary of CASIO Computer Co. Ltd, donated the scientific calculators to Nile Road Secondary and Embakasi Girls Secondary School in Nairobi County.

The initiative, the firm said, aligns with CASIO’s core mission of spearheading advancements in education to create more engaging and accessible learning experiences, fostering connections between educators and learners, and delivering tools that empower the pursuit of knowledge.

KCSE 2023 grading system

In September 2023, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu introduced a new grading system for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School exams (KCSE).

The new grading system will be implemented starting with this year's national exams.

The system reduces the mandatory subjects to only two: Mathematics and one language subject (English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language).

For the rest of the subjects, the Kenya National Examination Council will pick the five best performed to calculate a student's KCSE grade.
