If I had to pick one Mexico City hotel that stands out above the rest, it’s got to be The Wild Oscar. Located just steps from the famous Chapultepec park, the luxurious 28 rooms at this boutique are some of the most stylish and expansive I’ve seen anywhere in Mexico. Honestly, they feel more like mini residences than hotel rooms. 

The Wild Oscar’s unassuming entrance gives off a speakeasy vibe. Indeed, the hotel prides itself on exclusivity and privacy, making it the perfect Mexico City hotel for executives or anyone who values having a private retreat from the chaos of the city. 

One of the best features of The Wild Oscar is the fantastic rooftop, where you can soak in views of the CDMX skyline while eating breakfast in the morning or sipping cocktails at sunset.

Guests at The Wild Oscar also have access to a gym, in-room Nespresso machines, and onsite covid testing (for an additional fee). If you’re looking for the absolute best hotels in Mexico City, you can’t go wrong staying at The Wild Oscar.

Mumedi Design Hotel (Luxury Boutique)

The best boutique hotel in Mexico City’s history center. Small, but gorgeously designed.

For first time visitors or tourists looking to explore the many sites and attractions in Mexico City, it just makes sense to stay in the Centro Historico. And you won’t find a better hotel close to the famous Zocalo than the absolutely spectacular Mumedi Design Hotel.

Every detail of this small boutique is managed to perfection – from the incredibly comfortable beds to the in room coffee service to the downstairs restaurant, shop, and museum.

Several of the stylish rooms at Mumedi offer balconies overlooking the city’s busiest pedestrian street below, but you wouldn’t know it unless you opened the (incredibly effective) soundproof windows.

The only challenge with staying at Mumedi is snagging one of the 6 rooms before they book out. If you can, book the Deluxe Suite with Bathtub, featuring one of the biggest hotel bathrooms I’ve ever seen (and that’s saying something, as I review hotels for a living!).

Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel (Mid Range Hotel)

A fantastic mid-range hotel with a rooftop pool and a perfect location.

My most recent Mexico City accommodations were at the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel. I really enjoyed the hotel’s convenient location on Paseo de la Reforma, which made it easy to move about the city by walking or by Uber. 

My room had a fantastic view of the iconic Angel of Independence, a comfortable bed, a sizeable bathroom, and very fast free wifi (which I needed as I had some work to get done on this blog).

The views are even better from the rooftop pool, which was somehow always empty when I visited. The Sheraton also offers a solid breakfast, an onsite gym, a restaurant, a coffee shop, and quite a few facilities and meeting rooms for special events and conferences. 

If you’re looking for a brand name hotel in central Mexico City with a reasonable average nightly price, I think the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel is a solid option.

Le Meridien (Business Hotel)

Upscale apartment-style rooms with modern design.

I also recently stayed in the Le Meridien Mexico City, which is another excellent Marriott property along Paseo de la Reforma. This is a more modern upscale hotel, featuring large apartment-style rooms and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking some of the best sites in CDMX.

What really makes Le Meridien stand out among the other hotels in Mexico City I’ve seen is the large suites, which are basically full apartments. Mine came with a separate living room featuring a large sofa and giant HDTV. I also really liked the fast free wifi and the excellent workspace with a desk and chair. 

Downstairs you’ll find a gym and an indoor swimming pool with a jacuzzi. I dined at the hotel’s Mexican restaurant one night, and really enjoyed the fare there as well. Overall, the Le Meridien is definitely one of the best hotels in Mexico City I’ve stayed at, and I would gladly return.

Volga (New Luxury Hotel)

A brand new modern luxury hotel promising a mix of gastronomy, art, and culture (and an “urban cenote”).

I’m always a big fan of new hotels, and in Mexico City they don’t come any newer than this one.

Volga Hotel is a new luxury hotel that just opened in summer 2023. This brand-new CDMX hotel has a slick design, with interior rooms perched around a skylight and overlooking what the hotel owners call an “urban cenote.”

Volga also features a rooftop terrace with lounger, cabanas, a music stage, and a speakeasy bar.

Sofitel Mexico City Reforma (Luxury Hotel)

French style luxury and sweeping panoramic vistas.

Located right next door to the American embassy, the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma has got to be one of the most luxurious 5-star hotels in Mexico City, and probably in the entire country. Of course, this French luxury brand is known globally for its style and luxurious amenities, and Sofitel’s Mexico City property lives up to its reputation. 

Even if you are staying in a different Mexico City hotel, it’s worth reserving a table for brunch at the Sofitel’s incredible rooftop restaurant to soak in some of the city’s most breathtaking views.

La Valise (Luxury Hotel)

Elevated luxury, and sleeping under the stars.

Located in an elegant 1920s French-style townhome in Roma Norte, La Valise is quite possibly the most intimate luxury hotel in all of CDMX.

Las Valise only has three rooms: the El Patio Suite, La Luna Suite, and La Terraza. The latter offers a king-sized bed that rolls onto the private terrace, allowing guests the option of sleeping under the stars!

La Valise is also behind one of the most incredible hotels in Tulum, so if you’re looking for an elevated aesthetic, this is the perfect hotel for a romantic getaway. Just be sure to book a room asap, as with only three suites, La Valise books up fast.

Casa Prim (Mid-Range Boutique Hotel)

A gorgeous family-owned small boutique in a central location.

If you’re the type of traveler who loves staying in locally-owned hotels that exude character and class, then I think you should put Casa Prim at the top of your list of hotels in Mexico City.

The stylish rooms really bring out the character of the historic building, and the guest rooms are filled with lots of thoughtful touches like bathrobes, coffee makers, wardrobes, free toiletries, free wifi, and room service.

Casa Prim sports a small fitness center and an excellent rooftop restaurant where you can enjoy their highly rated free breakfast. The hotel’s location is just perfect too. It puts you in walking distance to the historic center, the restaurants of Roma Norte, or Paseo de la Reforma.

All in all, Casa Prim is a great option if you’re looking for a reasonable average price on a boutique hotel that checks all the right boxes.

Hotel Stanza (Budget Hotel)

A classic but highly affordable option with a perfect Roma Norte location.

If you’re looking for the best hotels in Mexico City for a budget, you won’t find a better location for the money than the classic Hotel Stanza. Hotel Stanza is located right on the lively Avenida Álvaro Obregón.

Now, to be honest, Hotel Stanza definitely shows its age in places. But that just gives it a bit of classic Mexico City charm.

My friend Rob recently stayed here and really enjoyed the breakfast buffet (extra cost), the attentive service, and the perfect location just a stone’s throw away from some of the best restaurants, bars, and nightlife in the Roma Norte neighborhood.

Intercontinental Presidente Mexico City (Business Hotel)

Popular with business travelers, the Intercontinental is a great hotel in Polanco.

The Intercontinental Presidente Mexico City is a classic Polanco hotel that is popular with conference and business travelers. Some of the suites on the side facing Chapultepec Park feature incredible vistas over the park and the National Museum of Anthropology. 

The many positive guest reviews emphasize this hotel’s many on-site restaurants and bars, the spacious health club and fitness center, and the comfortable beds. It’s also one of the best pet-friendly hotels in Mexico City, if you’re planning a trip with your dog or cat. 

Overall, the Intercontinental Presidente is one of the best Mexico City hotels if you want to stay in luxury within walking distance to Chapultepec Castle and the many other sites in the park or in Polanco.

Zócalo Central Hotel (4 Star Hotel)

Though I’ve yet to have the chance to personally stay at this city center hotel, I always come here when I visit Mexico City in order to have a drink or lunch at the hotel’s incredible terrace restaurant.

Zócalo Central Hotel overlooks the Zócalo and has some of the best views of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. 

Guest reviews also say this hotel is a charming place to stay. Some hotel reviews do complain about minor noise issues, guests like that many rooms have kitchenettes, say the beds are comfortable, and also highly compliment the staff. And, of course, everyone raves about the views.

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City (Luxury Hotel)

A luxurious hotel in Polanco, perfect for Marriott Bonvoy members.

Trendy travelers looking for a 5 star experience will love the JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City. Also located in Polanco, the hotel offers a good mix of classic luxury and modern style. Guest reviews for this hotel are spectacular, with many reviewers consistently citing its spacious rooms, incredible views, fine dining, large pool, health club, and attentive staff. 

The hotel largely caters to business travelers, but the location close to the many shops and restaurants of Polanco, and away from the noisiest parts of the city, also makes it the perfect luxury hotel for a city break.

Located right in the heart of the historic city center, the Gran Hotel features an incredibly ornate interior that is worth visiting if can’t quite afford the 5 star hotel class rates. The Tiffany stained glass ceiling is just stunning!

Besides the location and Instagram-perfect setting, this hotel wins rave reviews for its stunning views over the city’s main square (the Zocalo), the 5 star service, and the spacious rooms.

Barceló México Reforma (5 Star Hotel)

Centrally located and featuring a ton of rooms, this is a solid choice for families or business visitors.

I’ve yet to see the inside of a room at the Barceló México Reforma, but the common areas I’ve been in are incredible and this wouldn’t be a good list of hotels in Mexico City if we didn’t mention the Barcelo. 

The hotel is situated along Paseo de la Reforma, meaning you can walk to the historic center, Zona Rosa, or Roma Norte pretty easily. It features large rooms, a pool, the onsite Sonor Grill restaurant, air conditioning, a fitness center, and free wifi. Overall, it’s one of the best luxury hotels in CDMX for business travelers, large groups, or families.
