We’ve all experienced physical pain, and we all know what the universal agony of grief, isolation, and shame is like. Draining, paralyzing, and overwhelming, pain leaves us feeling powerless and unable to cope as new emotional and physical wounds open and aggravate historical injuries in a seemingly uncontrollable tailspin.

What can seem even harder is trying to help someone else in that state find hope, both in a professional and a personal context. But, armed with the right knowledge, it’s possible and we can contribute to helping our friends, clients, and selves out of suffering.

In previous editions, we learned that unresolved trauma manifests in our bodies, but we haven’t fully explored the impact that has on our present. The relationship between trauma, mental anguish, and chronic pain is well established. One in five of adults live with chronic pain, with traumatized individuals being twice as likely than the general population to experience this.

In The Master Series: Pain Edition, we will explore how pain connects with trauma and learn what we can do to address that relationship through our practice. Join us as we calculate the cost of pain on our mental health, consider the relationship between the pain we feel and the legacy of our past, and explore vital healing methods, techniques, and practices we can use to move towards a pain-free future.

Schedule

Day 1

Transforming Pain into Power: Harnessing the Power of Neuroplasticity

Learn about the science behind neuroplasticity and how it can be used to overcome chronic persistent pain. Drawing on his extensive knowledge and experience as a psychiatric consultant, Dr. Kampers will provide you with the tools you need to harness the power of neuroplasticity for healing.

Whether you are dealing with chronic pain yourself or working with clients who are, this workshop will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to effectively use neuroplasticity as a powerful tool for healing.

  • Understand the science behind neuroplasticity and how it relates to chronic persistent pain.
  • Learn about the role of mindset in pain management and how it can be used to harness the power of neuroplasticity.
  • Develop effective strategies for using neuroplasticity to transform pain into empowerment.

"The mind body approach requires you to embrace a different belief the belief that neuroplastic pain is due to your brain making a critical mistake and that your body is actually fine."

"The pain in our bodies will determine the tension in our bodies and the sounds that come out of our bodies"

Day 1

My Journey With Mind-Body Medicine and Ketamine

Catherine will take you on her journey with mind-body medicine and the use of ketamine. She will share with you her personal journey of recovery from fibromyalgia, undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disorder, peripheral neuropathy, and pre-autoimmune issues. This will be in tandem with Dr. Wayne Kampers’ specialist knowledge about pain recovery.

During this workshop, she will discuss how conventional treatment methods fell short in relieving her chronic pain and how she eventually found solutions through a combination of mind-body practices and the use of ketamine. She will guide you through the steps of her recovery and share the tools and techniques that have helped her to achieve miraculous freedom from pain.

Through her story, she hopes to inspire others to change their mindset about what is possible in their own healing journey and to provide them with the hope and resources they need to take control of their own health.

Day 1

Ketamine: Guided Journeys for Pain Relief

Ketamine has emerged in the last decade as a highly efficacious treatment for mood disorders, PTSD and depression. This session is designed for therapists, psychologists, physicians, and other mental health professionals who want to better understand how best to work with ketamine when patients present with pain that is both emotional and physical.

Together, Gita and Licia will explore the roles we can play as practitioners to ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients seeking relief.

Although ketamine is a powerful and effective tool, in order to use it effectively it needs more than just a prescription. Licia’s deep understanding of the mind-body connection and the importance of grounding and movement for embodiment compliment Gita’s clinical application of ketamine as a board certified psychiatrist. Together they will explore best practice and the most effective ways to help patients safely.

  • Discuss the medical aspects of ketamine including its long history of use and safety
  • Summarize the complications of ketamine use and potential adverse reactions
  • Discuss the importance of attunement and embodiment for truly successful ketamine assisted therapy
  • Explore vocal and movement exercises for embodiment
  • Outline the importance of collaboration and coordination among the interprofessional care team in order for most effective treatment and care.

"The attempt to escape from pain, is what creates more pain.”

“It is hard enough for observers to bear witness to pain. Is it any wonder, then, that the traumatized individuals themselves cannot tolerate remembering it and that they often resort to using drugs, alcohol, or self-mutilation to block out their unbearable knowledge?”

Day 2

Holistic Healing – A Mind, Body, Spirit Approach

The holistic medical approach of understanding a person with mind, body, spirit connection is important for any healing process.

By studying a complex medical issue with medical, mental and physical involvement requires an understanding of the person’s life and reflection on the incidences and trauma. The interconnection between the old traumas in the present health and mental state is an important area to explore and transform one’s life to a better state of health.

  • Explain the connection of mind, body, and spirit through the use of different case studies.
  • Explain how our emotions can be released with ancient systems of medicine of Ayurveda and Yoga principles.
  • Describe how the holistic medical philosophy can be translated into a treatment protocol.
  • Explain the fundamentals of the Ayurveda understanding of health and wellbeing.
  • Describe how to use yogic practises for mental balance.

Day 2

Outsmart Your Brain - Outsmart Your Pain

Recent pain research has established the notion that while acute pain is protective, chronic pain is overprotective. This overprotection happens through the brain’s interpretation of what is happening in the body. The brain in its effort to protect us from pain becomes unfortunately “better and better” at detecting pain. This is a somewhat like a too sensitive car alarm. Mindfulness practice can influence how the brain processes pain.

This workshop will provide a foundational understanding of what mindfulness is and different ways it can be applied to pain. We practice bringing awareness to what is happening in this particular moment with openness, curiosity and friendliness. Body awareness, working with challenging emotions and stories around the pain will be part of our exploration.

In this presentation participants will:

  1.     Identify the difference between acute and chronic pain
  2.     Define mindfulness, meditation and mindfulness meditation
  3.     Describe key research about the influence of mindfulness on pain
  4.     Practice identifying and stepping back from unhelpful thoughts about the pain
  5.     Examine the three layers on how mindfulness reduces pain (it helps with the pain directly, it lowers overall stress through stress reduction skills, it increases contentment and joy)
  6.     Describe the role of interoception in the processing of chronic pain

"If we simply try to avoid confronting painful experiences, there is no way to begin the healing process."

"Learning mindfulness helps us apply certain skills to dial down the danger signals in our brains."

Day 2

Pain Recovery is Possible: A New Paradigm & Gold-Standard for Treating Chronic Pain

Since the three waves of the opioid epidemic (prescription opioids, heroin, and synthetic opioids), little has changed in the practice of traditional medical treatment for chronic pain. Moreover, the medical system continues to apply interventions both invasive and noninvasive that are not evidenced-based, but health insurances continue to reimburse for such practices and, so the madness of doing the same things over and over again in hopes of a different outcome—is the very definition of insanity—and creates more unnecessary suffering.

This presentation will cover a new perspective on the definition of chronic pain, coupled with the new brain studies postulating that emotional and physical pains share the same neural networks. Doing away with old pain science and incorporating modern pain neuroscience findings is the start of proper treatment in pursuit of pain recovery (i.e., becoming pain free).

Additionally, applications of the Polyvagal Theory offer great insights and interventions in promoting increased safety physiology versus threat physiology, which transforms increased the likelihood of healing from chronic pain. Lastly, the current gold-standard for treating chronic pain is Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), which is the very essence of mind-body skills backed by modern pain neuroscience and offers a newfound sense of hope out of chronic pain.

  • Define chronic pain using modern pain science
  • Differentiate between old pain science and modern pain neuroscience
  • Explain how chronic pain develops in 4 phases
  • Describe the main goal of Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)
