It’s no surprise that the Prince and Princess of Wales are currently in the market for Prince George’s school. Kate’s absence from the Earthshot Prize in Singapore this week is on account of their eldest son’s exams, widely believed to be one of the selection exams required for several Independent Schools, including Eton; the ISEB Common Pre Tests.

Yet Prince William’s alma mater, where the royal family have been spotted, is not the only educational institution in the running. The Princess of Wales has been seen touring her own alma mater, Marlborough College. The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden spoke to a Marlborough insider, who confirmed the royal’s secret recent visit. ‘Catherine was here the other day,’ they said. ‘It’s been the talk of the school.’

If Prince George attended Marlborough College, he would not be the first royal to do so, nor the first Middleton. Kate’s sister Pippa and brother James are both alumni, and Princess Eugenie was also a student there.

The prestigious boarding school, founded in 1843, educates just over 1000 students in an idyllic setting on the edge of the charming market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire. It has world class facilities in sports, music and more – with concert halls, an indoor swimming pool and vast athletic fields. It is consistently regarded as one of the best schools in the country and costs just under £50,000 a year to attend. Crucially, it is a co-ed school, which means that George could potentially be joined by his siblings, who are currently being educated together at Lambrook Prep School in Windsor.

Eton, one of Britain's most recognisable and lauded schools, founded in 1440, is the other natural choice for the young royal children. Prince William and his brother Prince Harry were both educated there. With fees just under £60,000 a year, it is one of the UK’s most expensive choices, but has an impeccable reputation as one of the leading schools in the country with a legion of esteemed alumni; including several prime ministers.

One school unlikely to be on the list is Gordonstoun. Despite the fact this was the alma mater of Prince Philip, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and the King, the acclaimed Scottish boarding school was famously an unhappy time for Charles III. He was one of the first in his family to attend an independent school as opposed to being educated at home, like Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.
