We stayed close to home, near our headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, for McGee & Co.’s 2023 Winter Collection shoot. Each year we hunt for the perfect space to showcase our seasonal release, searching for a house that tells the story of the collection and allows each piece to shine.
The classic detailing of this home’s checkerboard tiles, intricately paneled walls, and exposed floor joist ceilings offered the perfect pairing for the collection’s rich color palette of ochre, crimson, and brown, classic silhouettes, and layered texture and warmth. This home was built by @northstarbuilders alongside architect, @maria_willmarth, who graciously let us use the space. We love the feelings of nostalgia and sense of contentment found within these walls. Follow along below as we tour through the spaces used to showcase our 2023 McGee & Co. Winter Collection.

Entryway
“In this home, we had the most gorgeous entryway to work with,” Shea explains. To set the foundation, Shea and the design team used a pair of McGee & Co.’s Allen Console. While traditional in form, the console’s inky black finish brings a touch of modernity to the entryway vignette. “I love how it plays off the diamond, marble floors,” Shea notes. In high-contrast spaces, bring in a color tone that connects the darkest and the lightest to meld and soften. Avoid visually jarring symmetry by introducing different styling elements on top of the foundational pieces, like Shea and the design team did here in the opposing consoles.

Living Room
“We have a lot of neutrals in here,” Shea notes. “One thing that is different than what you typically see from us is instead of a patterned rug we did a beautiful diamond jute rug. It helps pull that textural, earthy look together.” To keep a neutral palette, refrain from introducing color and instead utilize various textures and forms to create visual contrast, as Shea and the design team did elsewhere in this space. Layers of materials like boucle, linen, and velvet create a sense of movement and dimension, while elements like marble and wood play off the texture of the jute rug.
On the sofa, a stack of pillows with highly textured materials and pattern-heavy prints is a great way to keep your home’s styling fresh for the winter season. A pillow that’s solid in color and larger in scale makes a great foundation for the assortment.

Kitchen
In the home’s kitchen, “we have a new pendant that I’m really excited about,” exclaims Shea of McGee & Co.’s Letterly Pendant. “The shape is gorgeous, even the shape of the glass below is really beautiful. There are a lot of ways to style this pendant. You could do one over a dining table, multiple down a hallway, and it’s substantial enough that you could use it as a singular light in a bedroom as well.” Over the kitchen island, a general rule of thumb to follow is to allow 34” to 42” of clearance between the bottom of the pendant and the island, depending on your ceiling height. Dining Room
“We have styled [the dining room] to feel very holiday,” Shea explains. “The tone of the tablecloth speaks to the season but it’s not an overtly holiday pattern,” Shea adds of the Anarkali Block Print Floral Tablecloth that is part of our newly launched McGee & Co. x Filling Spaces collaboration. The 100% woven cotton fabric is handmade with a traditional block-printing technique by the two sisters behind the Filling Spaces brand. Learn more about the makers here. Shea and the design team recommend focusing on a color palette rather than a theme for tablescape styling that isn’t limited to one specific holiday.

Bedroom
“The curved corner bed in a really pretty dark grey fabric sets a foundation for you to be able to change out your bedding or your pillows for each season,” Shea says of the Selby Upholstered Bed in moss linen. To style it as is, Shea suggests folding an end-of-the-bed quilt into thirds to allow a sense of contrast with the rest of your bedding and a foot-of-the-bed bench.
“We have intentionally left the textiles not super pattern heavy because on the opposite side of the room there’s a fun surprise,” Shea explains.
