13 Killed As SUV Rams Into Truck In Karnataka

NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (NNN-PTI) – At least 13 people were killed yesterday, after an SUV rammed into a stationary tanker truck, in India’s south-western state of Karnataka, police said.

The accident took place on the Bangalore-Hyderabad national highway, in Chikkaballapur district, about 62 km north of Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka.

“Today (yesterday) a speeding SUV carrying 13 people collided with a stationary tanker truck in Chikkaballapur, killing 12 people on the spot … and injuring one, who later on, succumbed in hospital,” a police official said.

According to the police, the ill-fated SUV was on its way to Bengaluru from Anantapur district of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state.

Preliminary investigations carried out by the police suggest fog and low visibility might have caused the accident.

Around 150,000 people are killed every year, in about half a million road crashes across India, officials said.

The Indian government has set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.– NNN-PTI
