The Cheapest Places To Retire In Canada Were Ranked & This Quebec Destination Made The Cut
The cheapest places to retire in Canada were recently ranked and one city in Quebec managed to take the top spot.
Travel + Leisure released its list of the 10 Cheapest Places to Retire in Canada and Quebec City ranked number one, proving itself to be an enticing destination for Canadian seniors.
"For this list of the most affordable places to retire in Canada, we considered housing costs, health care, things to do, weather, lifestyle, and culture with the help of experts," Travel + Leisure said.
"We searched the 10 provinces where most of the country’s population lives. (Three territories north of the provinces have fewer than 131,000 residents.) While living costs vary, each province offers a variety of affordable cities and towns."
The travel publication highlighted Quebec City's agreeable seasons and large international expat community. Although the winters are certainly cold, the spring and summertime make up for months of frigid conditions thanks to loads of festivals, outdoor activities, natural beauties and delicious foods.
Travel + Leisure also noted how Quebec City has "high-quality healthcare," and "excellent hospitals." It's fair to say many Quebec residents would disagree with that, especially considering the increase in hospital wait times and staff shortages — a situation many Canadians are all too familiar with.
Nevertheless, Quebec City ranks significantly lower than other cities in terms of cost of living. In fact, Numbeo finds that prices in Quebec City are nearly 30% lower than in New York City, with rent being nearly 80% cheaper.
Fredericton, Charlottetown, Halifax and West Kelowna all made up the remainder of the top five. Additionally, British Columbia is the only Canadian province that scored two entries on the list.
