Whether you're a gardening beginner or expert, Irish Examiner columnist Peter Dowdall has the answer to your questions
Garden Q&A: How much should I cut  hornbeam tree branches?

The hornbeam tree. File picture

I have a hornbeam tree which is about 30 years old. Sizewise, it is 25ft tall and about 30ft wide. I trim back the side of it that is at the driveway, but on the lawn side, the branches are dipping down onto the ground. I love the tree but does it need to be “tamed” somewhat?

ANSWER

No, a semi-mature tree such as this doesn’t need to be pruned or “tamed” — but it can be. In a situation like this, where you must prune one side of it to keep the driveway clear — and assuming that you’re not willing to move the driveway to suit the tree — then yes, I would recommend cutting back more generally for balance.

However far you need to cut the branches back on the driveway side should be replicated all around the tree so that it looks in proportion and balanced.

The best time to prune a deciduous tree such as a hornbeam is during the autumn and early winter when the growth is slowing down for the dormant season.
