Knowledge of materials, and a feeling for their innate qualities, it absolutely essential in garden design. This fact has been less recognized in the west than in the east, where Feng Shui has led to a keen interest in the balance of materials. Reading is useful. But the best way to learn about materials is to work with them. Poetry should be learned 'by heart'; materials should be learned 'by hand'.
