A forgotten seaside town that once rivalled Blackpool is set for an almighty revamp that could see it return to its heyday.

New Brighton is a coastal town in the Wirral in the north west of England that was once of the UK’s top seaside resorts.

The destination was once home to the tallest tower in the UK and the biggest lido - but both have been taken away from the town.

Now a new masterplan has revealed Wirral Council’s aims to breathe new life into the retro destination with aims for a new lido that could cost up to £40m to put in place, reports The BBC.

The plans that set out the intentions for the area over the next two decades also includes new hotels, a pop up beach park, theatre plaza, restaurants and cafes.

A land train would provide better transport in and out of the town.

Chairman of Wirral Council's economy, regeneration and housing committee councillor, Tony Jones, said: "New Brighton has seen a lot of investment relatively recently but that is just a starting point - the town needs much more intervention to re-establish it and make the most of this fantastic place to live, work and of course to visit.

“I understand people will be keen to see work moving ahead and I share that, but it is absolutely vital that whatever changes we bring forward are done in the spirit of partnership.”

The town’s tower was taken down in 1921, the pier was dismantled in the 1970s and the pool taken away in the 1990s.

Standing at 567ft the New Brighton Tower dominated the nearby landscape and was the tallest building in the country.

During its brief life in the early part of the 1900s, the New Brighton Tower was a major visitor attraction in its own right and built as a taller rival to Blackpool Tower.

It is claimed in the first year of its opening it attracted more than half a million visitors to the top and at night it was illuminated by fairy lights.

It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower but the New Brighton version didn’t have the same staying power.

The New Brighton masterplan is currently in its third consultation phase so residents can have their say on the ideas for the resort.
