I can't say that I know a great deal about the town of Linz,
but it has some lovely baroque buildings in the centre which are well worth
a look. A few years ago it had no brewery, despite being in Oberösterreich, the Austrian state with the strongest beer tradition. There is now a pub brewery (Josef), giving the visitor the chance to sample some truly local beers. According to my handy Czech pocket atlas, it's the third largest town in Austria and has a population of around 200,000. Well, you learn something new every day. But it must be a far-sized city, because the main railway station is an inconvenient tram ride away from the old centre. On the way to town, you should be able to spot the Klosterhof, a huge Stiegl beerhall and beer garden (it'll be on your left). These are the pubs I stumbled across in the city. |

The front bar has stone pillars supporting a vaulted ceiling. Behind
this is another room added much more recently. The furnishings are of simple brown
wood with panelled walls and long fitted benches. In accordance with the very simple
interior there is no bar - just a beer tap sticking out of the wall with a few shelves
for glasses above it and a sink below. Pretty good food at reasonable prices. It also a hotel with 19 guest rooms. Bottled beers: Schlägl Leicht, Abtei-Pils (12.5%), Doppel-Malz (13%) & Bock; Hofbrauhaus Freising Edelweizen & Meister Weisse. Closed public holidays. |

Cellar pub with a beamed ceiling and tiled floor just off one of the
main shopping streets. It has a taprrom and several other rooms. Studenty in a posh
sort of way. The trams passing by on the main street give a good rumbling effect.

Huge beer hall with many large rooms off a central corridor. In style,
similar to one of the large Munich beer halls and with a similarly wide spectrum of
customers. At the back is one of Austria's largest beer gardens. |
