Buttoned Up With Ceramics: A Virginia Sin and Haptic Lab Quilt Coat Collab

Soft vs. hard, quilted vs. fired. These dualities describe the latest collaboration between award-winning ceramicist Virginia Sin and B-corp certified textile maker Haptic Lab, both who happen to be studio neighbors at New York’s Brooklyn Navy Yard. Created just in time for fall and winter, their newly debuted Quilt Coats bring together two different spheres of craftsmanship in a garment that’s as delightful as it is cozy.

Haptic Lab, known for their quilted coats and maps, made this particular design oversized and roomy, with a drop shoulder sleeve to remove bulk around the arms. There are three designs – Snake Path, Pinwheel, and Nine Patch – and all of them come with a hood, a first for the textile brand. To finish off the coat, Sin, who is associated with a very distinct playful and modern style, designed a single large button, adding a contrast against the soft 100% organic cotton. Each ceramic button is made by hand and left unglazed so that the button can patina with time and use. To launder, simply wrap the button in tinfoil and wash the coat inside out on a gentle cycle. Like ceramics and quilts in their traditional forms, this Quilted Coat is intended to be an heirloom to be passed down for years to come.
