This fall, Dalhousie is set to launch a new initiative that will offer free menstrual products in nearly 100 restrooms across its campuses.

A partnership between Human Resources and Facilities Management, this project recognizes that menstruation affects individuals regardless of their gender identity, making these products accessible in women's, men's and all-gender restrooms. It respects and acknowledges the needs and experiences of transgender and non-binary individuals who may menstruate.

“We are committed to inclusivity and eliminating barriers including access to menstrual products,” says Chris Hattie, co-acting, assistant vice-president, Human Resources. “We hope that by offering them in designated campus restrooms it will not only improve access, but also protect dignity and help break down the stigma associated with menstruation.”

Period poverty is an issue that affects all ages, backgrounds and income levels. It prevents individuals, particularly those in low-income or marginalized communities, from managing their menstrual health in a healthy manner. This is especially true for students whose limited income is being split between tuition, rent, and groceries.

“I am proud to support the new initiative aimed at enhancing affordability and accessibility to menstrual products on our campus,” says Mariam Knakriah, president, Dalhousie Student Union. “Ensuring cost-effective access to these products is not only a practical matter but also a testament to our commitment to financial inclusivity within our academic community.”

To raise awareness about the location of these menstrual products, large red stickers will be placed below the gender signage on the designated restroom doors, ensuring identification of those in need.

Individuals are encouraged to contact [email protected] if restroom supplies need replenishment, ensuring a continuous supply is enough for all members of the Dal community. This is a pilot project and will be monitored and evaluated after one year.
