Netflix viewers rave about new Korean crime thriller as they hail it 'the best movie in a long time'

Netflix viewers have been blown away by a new Korean revenge thriller, with many hailing the lead star as the 'female John Wick'.

The action-packed Ballerina became available to stream on Netflix on October 5, starring Jun Jong-seo, who won Best Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance in psychological thriller The Call.

Directed by Lee Chung-hyun and with a score composed by rapper, singer and producer GRAY, the film is set in the bright, bustling capital of South Korea, Seoul.

Ballerina tells a tale of the lonesome ex-bodyguard Ok-ju (Jun Jong-seo), who reconnects with her former classmate and best friend, Min-Hee (Park Yu-rim), a professional ballerina.

Shortly after restoring their friendship, Min-Hee winds up dead in a staged suicide, leaving behind a cryptic note which reads: 'Please get revenge for me!... I know you'll be able to help.'

The handwritten plea prompts Ok-ju to use her investigative and defence skills to find her friend's killer and enact revenge.

The ex-bodyguard is tasked with single-handedly taking on a brutal gang, who run a netherworld of drugs, violence and horrific crimes against women.

Working all alone and up against formidable odds, can Ok-ju protect her friend the way she wasn't able to when she was alive?

The film has earned an impressively rare 100 per cent score on film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to encourage others to watch the action thriller, labelling it as 'the best' film they've seen in a long time.

One impressed viewer said, 'Ballerina on Netflix was so good!' while another wrote, 'Ballerina on Netflix is a straight 10000000/10.'

Another fan wrote, 'Ballerina is one of the best movies I have ever watched in a while,' while another said, 'Just watched the best movie of all time and its called Ballerina.'

Two viewers compared Ballerina's female lead to Keanu Reeves' retired hitman character in the John Wick franchise.

The other said: 'Fond as I am of little Keanu (and the 7 fake account Keanu's that follow me) the lady fighting in Ballerina would totally own John Wick.'

Another fan of the film described the production as 'another very solid Korean revenge thriller,' adding how they 'loved the visuals.'

A final viewer, who was left in awe, wrote: 'Entertaining stylish action thriller with a leisurely storyline. Pre-climax fight sequence is absolutely superb...'

Another recently released Korean drama about the dark world of organ harvesting has been dubbed the next Squid Game by fans.

Bargain, which became available to stream on Paramount+ October 5, won Best Screenplay at the Canneseries Festival this year - the first Korean series to be awarded such an accolade.

The gruesome thriller is not for the faint hearted, featuring sex scams and  violent crime, as a middle-aged man is lured to a motel room to have his organs harvested by strangers - before an earthquake hits, leading to a fight for survival.
