Stream is turned bubblegum pink after 'paint was improperly disposed of' in historic Devon town

  • The Alsa Brook in Tiverton, Mid Devon, turned bright pink last week
  • EA investigation found that paint had been dumped in the waterway

People in a small town in Devon have been left shocked after discovering that one of their local waterways had been turned bright pink.

The Alsa Brook in Tiverton, the largest town in Mid Devon, turned bubblegum pink after paint was dumped in the stream last Thursday.

An Environment Agency (EA) officer was sent to investigate the brook and found the water posed no further risk to humans or animals.

EA said: 'There are many road drains, culverts, and houses in the area.

'Based on the colour and behaviour of the contaminant, our officer determined that it appears to have been caused by paint disposal.'

Property and business owners have been reminded to take leftover paint and dirty water containing hazardous chemicals to a waste disposal service.

Tiverton Council said they hadn't been contacted by EA about the investigation.

Tiverton, an ancient market town, is nestled between the Rivers Exe and Lowman, and is one of the last in the UK still operating a horse-drawn barge.

How to correctly dispose of paint

  • Unwanted paint can be donated to charities such as Community Repaint who donate it to community groups and those in social need
  • As local councils and landfill sites are unable to accept liquid paint, it must be hardened using paint hardener, sawdust, soil or sand
  • Solvent based paint, paint thinner and white spirit should be disposed of as hazardous waste at a waste disposal service
