Zombie Family
With old clothes and a few pantry items, your family can pull off a Hollywood-level zombie ensemble in no time! To get this look, Instagrammer Collette Wixom of @ministylehacker (with some help from her mom) shredded clothes using scissors and razor blades, stained them with coffee grinds, and attached grass using spray adhesive. For the fake blood, she used "three parts corn syrup, one part water, red food coloring, flour to thicken," she reports.

To make Ada's DIY Apple Bushel Costume: For this cute-to-the-core ensemble, start with a peck bushel basket. Remove the bottom; add red ribbon suspenders. Next, use small red balloons (with uninflated green water balloon ties) to fill basket with “apples.” Top it with a red felt beret embellished with a green felt “stem” and “leaf.”

Gauzy Ghosts
Yards of chilling cheesecloth will transform your entire family into a pair of friendly specters. Rattle some (plastic) chains before collecting candy in a ghost pillowcase!
DIY Ghost Costumes: Start with a base layer of black clothing. Paint faces with white face paint and add black eyeshadow around the eyes. Drape and pin neutral cheesecloth, holding it in place with white safety pins and allowing it to trail on the floor a bit. Add a second layer of large, loosely woven, white gauze—we used door and window decorating material. Drape a plastic chain and vintage-inspired lock around the shoulders.
