Coming up with the name for Dutch’s Sandwich Shop in Montclair was easy for owner Amir Kamal. It’s a way to remember his Olde English bulldog. Amir describes Dutch as one of a kind, a best friend and pup who had his own fan club. Dutch’s picture now hangs on the wall of the shop.
Deciding on the location, however, is a slightly different story. “I frequently visit the area and one thing led to another. Growing up in New York City, I know that location is one of the most important factors for a restaurant. Being on Church Street is one of the best locations,” Amir says. In fact, he first opened a sandwich shop in Clifton after the pandemic hit. That early success is why he is now able to open a larger shop in Montclair.

Dutch’s Sandwich Shop features local artwork and plays fun tunes. Outdoor sidewalk seating is available for about 15 diners at tables and a picnic table. Patrons can expect “gourmet-tasting” sandwiches made with top-of-the-line products. Their most popular menu item is The Dutch Daddy. It comes with hot pastrami, bacon, two eggs, muenster cheese, and Dutch’s signature sauce on a brioche roll.
Amir’s favorite sandwiches are The Driver and the Chicken Continental. But he also recommends The Philly, (their New York version of a Philly cheesesteak) or their In The Heights sandwich. Dutch’s Sandwich Shop frequently try out new sandwiches, too. “We believe the bread and sauce make a great sandwich,” Amir says. “We do every detail of the sandwich to perfection.”
They also serve ice cream from Mikey Likes It Ice Cream in New York. Menu add-ons include salads and wings. “Sandwiches are our bread and butter though,” Amir assures.
A Unique Rewards Program
Each month, Dutch’s Sandwich Shop offers a Sandwich of the Month. For every purchase of this sandwich, patrons receive a raffle ticket for a “Print of the Month”. At the end of the month, the shop gives away a custom print to one raffle winner. The prints correspond to the Sandwich of the Month, which in turn is a play on a popular film. For instance, one recent sandwich was the Queso Blanco, a play off the movie Casablanca.
