INTERVIEW: The Unique Nature Of “Thelma The Unicorn”

Starting this Friday May 17th on Netflix, the whole family can enjoy the new animated music comedy feature Thelma the Unicorn, based on the books by The Bad Guys author Aaron Blabey. Here’s my Animation Scoop Q&A with directors Jared Hess and Lynn Wang. (This interview was edited for length and clarity.)

Jackson Murphy: Congratulations on this. And Jared, congratulations on “Ninety-Five Senses”, the excellent, Oscar nominated short from this year. When it comes to that and this, and you worked on the “Napoleon Dynamite” animated TV series as well, how has animation inspired you throughout your life?

Jared Hess: It’s been a long time coming. I’ve always loved animation. To finally get the chance to do it as a feature has just been a dream come true. I love everything about it. As everyone knows, it’s limitless what you can do in animation and bringing to life characters through design and animation… there’s nothing like it. It’s been an amazing experience.

INTERVIEW: The Editing And Cinematography Of “Inside Out 2”

While visiting Pixar in March, I got to see the first half-hour of Inside Out 2 — opening in theaters one month from today, June 14th. For this Animation Scoop Q&A, here are my conversations with editor Maurissa Horwtiz and DP, Camera Adam Habib. (These interviews were combined and edited for length and clarity.)

Jackson Murphy: Maurissa, what’s interesting about the 30 minutes of footage I’ve seen is the back and forth movement — from Riley to inside the mind and having these new characters. How much of a challenge was putting all that together?

Maurissa Horwitz: Definitely balancing the storylines in this movie is the biggest challenge for editorial. The fun of the movie is the emotions. You want to be with the emotions as much as you can. Something that we found with this movie, in contrast to the first one, is that a lot of the situations are social situations. To really land the emotions, and the best thing for the story and for Riley, is to spend a little more time with her than we did in the first one. But we’re still very aware of the balance and wanting to experience as much as we could of Riley through the emotions. To be honest, after every screening we would have of this movie, I would go back and watch the first one just to keep in mind the visual language and how they really crafted the edit of the first one. That was always with me in my head as I was moving forward.

INTERVIEW: Strap In For “Mars Express”

GKIDS is releasing a new adult, sci-fi animated action drama in theaters nationwide beginning this Thursday May 2nd. Mars Express, from co-writer and director Jérémie Périn, is about a detective agency duo (one human, the other android) on the red planet during a dangerous time in the year 2200. What will they uncover? Here’s what moviegoers can expect from this 2023 Annecy selection and 2024 Cesar Awards nominee. (This interview with Périn was conducted as an Email Q&A and was edited for length and clarity.)

Jackson Murphy: How did you organize how this incredibly detailed futuristic society on Mars would function?

Jérémie Périn: We worked in layers. When writing the script with Laurent Sarfati, our aim was to depict a credible, tangible universe. As far as possible, we wanted to avoid magical or overly fanciful science fiction. That’s why we thought about the rules of the Mars Express universe, not only in terms of technology, but also from a political and social point of view, the organization of urban planning, etc. To do this, we met with specialists in various fields: planetologists, programmers, car designers… All of them contributed their expertise and inspired us to write, giving us ideas that could take us out of certain reflexes of sci-fi representations. With the broad outlines established in the script, it was a matter of making the whole thing visual and coherent. That’s where Mikael Robert, the film’s art director, and the various people in charge of mecha design, props, sets, etc. came in. We added even more ideas that consolidated and enriched the written basis of this world.

INTERVIEW: Jeff Fowler On “Knuckles” And “Sonic 3”

Academy Award nominee Jeff Fowler (of the animated short “Gopher Broke”) directed the blockbuster first two installments in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film franchise. He returns for “Sonic 3” (in theaters this December) and also serves as executive producer and director of the first episode of new spinoff series Knuckles. The six-episode event, with the return of Idris Elba as the voice of the title character, premieres this Friday April 26th on Paramount+. Fowler joins me for this fun Animation Scoop Q&A. (This interview was edited for length and clarity.)

Jackson Murphy: When I saw the second “Sonic” movie two years ago in theaters, it was an event for families. There were kids screaming and cheering at the end and the excitement for it all. This is a six-episode event. How would you describe “Knuckles” as an event highlight in your life and career?

Jeff Fowler: We have such an amazing time making these films and then when the opportunity came along to do sort of a spinoff and focus on Knuckles, who we all loved when we introduced him in “Sonic 2”, I think we all just got incredibly excited because there’s so many great characters in this world. We’ve barely even scratched the surface. As we move from film to film, we’re always expanding the cast and bringing in more of these fan favorite characters. And we always love teasing where we’re going at the end of the films. So to get to do a whole story around Knuckles… but also, honestly I think we all look at it like it’s a movie. It’s my same crew for the most part that does the films. I’m so proud of where we ended up — the look of it, the quality… it has everything that the movies have, and I’m so excited for everybody to see it.
